Book review - Building Websites with Joomla!

Building Websites with Joomla! is a step by step guide to installing and creating a Joomla! web site.

The book covers everything you would expect in a basic guide. It is split into 11 chapters, covering the history of Joomla!, Joomla! installation and configuration, through to programming your own extensions. The author follows a very logical path through the material and each of the chapters is well written, concise and to the point. In certain places I feel this book is too concise: often explaining how something works but not going into enough depth on how it could be used.

The strongest part of the book for me was the documentation the author has written for the major 3rd party components. The book explains how to install and configure: Simpleboard, Events Calendar, Zoom Media Gallery, Docman and VirtueMart. It also educates the reader about Joomla!'s fantastic extensions site (http://extensions.joomla.org/).

As you would expect, the book gets more advanced as you step through the chapters. The final two discuss building your own template and writing your own modules. The book gives a good overview of these topics but you need knowledge of HTML, CSS and PHP to fully understand them.

Building websites with Joomla! by Hagen Graf is currently the only basic guide to Joomla! available to buy in the UK. For someone who is coming to Joomla! either as a novice or a seasoned developer looking for an overview of the system, this book is a must-have.

Even if you own Building Websites with Mambo, I would still recommend buying this book for the 3rd party component documentation.
